About Old Gits
Run by David McKinnon
The Old Gits is not a commercial organisation. We don't charge anything and don't make a profit. Only the costs associated with the trip are charged to those on the trip.
Trips are arranged because we're bikers who love touring and want as many other bikers to share the wonders of touring Europe on a motorcycle without the challenges of having to do all of the arrangements.
We enjoy our comforts so utilise hotels on our trips, booked in advance so as to ensure availability and to get the best price. Hotels are normally 3* or 4* but all are selected because they have good reviews and fit nicely with our intended routes.
Route planning is done in advance of the trip and shared on MyRouteApp for those on the trip. This means everyone on the trip is aware of the intended routes and ensures that great roads are not missed because your navigation device decides it's quicker/shorter to take a different route.
Since 1998 the Old Gits trips happen once a year and are “gentlemen only” trips where the numbers attending can be quite large. The work to organise them is done for free and those on the trip only pay for their own accommodation and ferry crossings. However, we have regularly been asked by various people if we’d be interested in utilising almost 30 years of experience, a vast knowledge of great destinations and a detailed understanding of what works, to deliver trips which would allow for both ladies and gentlemen.
We now run two types of trip. The traditional annual Old Gits trip and a a number of extra organised extra trips each year. The annual Old Gits trip will remain a 9 day (1 working week plus 2 weekends) trip so as minimise the impact to those who work while giving maximum time to enjoy the wonderful roads. The group sizes on such trips will be flexed to accommodate as many people as would like to attend, within the limitations of the hotel accommodation.
The extra trips take a slightly different format. They are limited to around 6 to 10 bikes maximum, including a trip coordinator, who will accompany the whole trip. However, the cost of the trip will include the costs associated with the trip coordinator. Each trip will be between 4 and 16 days, covering some of the best riding roads in Europe and some of the most interesting places to visit. Hotels will be booked in advance. As ever, hotels, routes and locations are selected using our extensive experience and knowledge to meet the requirements of bikers and their bikes.
